One day riding Whitewater, Jake mentioned to Steffen that he wanted to tune skis and boards and make back the cash he had spent on his waxing iron.
Later, as Steffen watched Jake glide past him, and the rest of the group, on the next flat section, the idea really took hold...
At the time, Jake was as blacksmithing student at Selkirk. Was his extra glide the result of pure artisan prowess? Or from the care of someone who just wants to get the most out of gear?
Either way, Steffen had seen the results, and wanted more people to benefit from Jake's skill, and for him to be able to pay off his waxing iron investment.
And that's how we got to where we are today, running Nelson's first ultra-convenient, door-to-door, 24h turnaround, premium ski gear tuning service.
Common questions about our service and when and why to tune your ski gear.
Anywhere within Nelson City limits. You pick a one-hour pick-up slot, let us know where to pick up from, and your tuned skis are delivered back to you at the same spot, the next day (if you choose the next-day service) or two days later at the same time.
We usually do runs every Tuesday and will add more availability if the demand is there! We grow by word-of-mouth, so if you like our service, let a friend know!
We get that stuff gets in the way, and want that to be a relaxed experience, so we've made this as relaxed as possible.
If you miss your pick-up, we'll email you a credit code back for the total value of your order, less a C$10 delivery service fee. You don't need to do anything to get this credit, and you can use the credit when you reschedule or give the credit to someone else.
If you are not available at your scheduled drop-off time, we'll leave your gear on your doorstep or any other sensible drop-off spot. We'll send you a photo of where it's been left, but if this is a risk you are not able to run, please make sure to be around for drop-off.
As often as every 3-5 ski days if you're a performance hound, otherwise start of season and every 4 weeks is good enough for most casual skiers.
At a minimum, you'll want to wax your skis or snowboard as soon as:
It's the start of the season.
The bases begins to look faded or greyish or feel rough, indicating dryness and wear.
You've skied over rocks and stones, or have been freeriding on park features.
You're being left behind or getting stuck on flat sections.
Before storing your gear for the summer, to protect the base from rusting and maintain its condition.
There have been significant temperature weather changes and gone from wet to dry snow, or vice versa.
Usually yes, and the reason that we would normally get a better result than a home tech, is mainly down to gear and materials, and possibly experience. We carry different waxes for different skiing temperatures, have high quality brushes for both cleaning and finishing wax jobs which makes a big difference to end glide result, and also have plenty of experience, a reputation to uphold, and a strong desire to do a good job for you.
We don't, but we'll tell you if we spot any convexity or concavity on your bases, in which case we can recommend if and how to deal with this.
